Registering to Vote in Dutchess County (as all Bard Students have the right to do):
1. Fill out a Voter Registration Form To obtain the appropriate form and instructions that will allow you to register to vote in Dutchess County elections, contact Lisa Whalen, assistant to Jonathan Becker, Dean of International Studies Phone: ext. 7816 E-mail: lwhalen@bard.edu or come to Brook House 102
Important information for students: In order to register successfully you must put you put your dorm room address on the line where the form requests "Address where you live" (eg: Tewksbury 410) and write "Bard College, PO Box 5000 PLUS your Bard PO Box, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY 12504" on the line where the form requests "Address where you get your mail."
2. Mail your Registration Form Mail this Dutchess County Voter Registration form to: Dutchess County Board of Elections 47 Cannon Street Poughkeepsie, NY 12601
or return to form to Lisa Whalen in Brook House 102, and we will mail the form for you
3. Registration Deadlines Voter registration deadlines for Dutchess County: - The deadline to vote for primary elections to be held in September is mid-AUGUST.
- The deadline for general election to be held in November is in early OCTOBER.
Registering to Vote in Another State and Obtaining an Absentee Ballot
Registering to Vote in Another State (if you have already registered to vote proceed to ‘Obtaining an Absentee Ballot) 1. go to the Project Vote Smart website (www.votesmart.org) 2. click on "Voter Registration" 3. click on your state in the drop-down list 4. fill out appropriate forms online or print out, fill out on paper, and mail in to specified address.
Obtaining an Absentee Ballot (Please note: You must first be registered in your state of residence. If you have not done so see section above on "Registering to Vote in Another State") 1. go to the Project Vote Smart website (www.votesmart.org) 2. click on "Voter Registration" 3. click on your state in the drop-down list 4. scroll down to "Voting by Absentee Ballot" 5. Follow instructions (which vary from state to state). Some states allow you to complete the forms on-line, others require you to print out and mail in directly.
Please note: Read instructions carefully. Some states have specific time frames in which the request must be mailed; take care that you are not too early or too late.
If you complete the forms correctly a ballot will be sent to you before the election. The ballots normally must be postmarked by election day, but you need to check the specific instructions for your particular state.
